Does Laos Support eSIM? (2026): Operators, Shops and Travel eSIMs
Published Updated

Short answer: yes, Laos supports eSIM. Lao Telecom (LTC) and Unitel both issue eSIMs, but in their service centres in town, with your passport: the airport counters only sell physical SIM cards. You can also use an eSIM bought online before you travel, either a travel eSIM that roams onto a Lao network or a native Lao profile like ours. eSIMs sold online are data-only: no Lao phone number, calls or SMS.
Which Lao operators issue eSIMs?
| Operator | eSIM? | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Lao Telecom (LTC) | Yes | Its website says any number can be switched to eSIM, or a new number opened as an eSIM. It also advertises a “Tourist eSIM” online; in our test on 23 August 2026 we couldn’t complete a purchase (details). |
| Unitel | Yes | Unitel’s eKYC system (document reading and facial recognition with a liveness check) is described as supporting eSIM registration. Issued in town service centres with your passport. |
| ETL | Not confirmed | We found no official ETL eSIM offer for tourists. ETL registers physical SIMs through its ETL-KYC app. |

At the airports (Wattay and Luang Prabang), the counters sell physical SIM cards: passport, a short form, cash, a few minutes. Ask for an eSIM and you’ll usually be sent to a service centre in town. Our Vientiane guide lists the official shops and their phone numbers.
Native operator eSIM, travel eSIM, or ours?
| Operator eSIM from a Lao shop | Travel eSIM (roaming) | Our Unitel eSIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where to get it | Service centre in Laos, with passport | Online, before you go | Online, before you go |
| Lao phone number | Yes | No, usually | No: data only |
| Network | Lao operator, local | A Lao network, via roaming | Unitel, as a native local profile |
| Data roaming setting | Not needed | Usually needed | Not needed: data starts automatically |
| Works on arrival | After the shop visit | Yes | Yes |
Data-only matters for some apps: LCR (train tickets) and LOCA (ride-hailing) ask for a Lao number to register. If you need them, get a local SIM or operator eSIM in a shop, with your passport.
Our Laos eSIMs run on Unitel: 10GB for 10 days at $6.90, 15GB for 15 days at $7.90, 20GB for 30 days at $8.90 and 30GB for 30 days at $9.90. Once the allowance is used, data stops (no slow-speed fallback).
Before you buy: check your phone
- eSIM support: check the exact model, not just the brand. Regional versions differ: Apple notes that in mainland China only a few iPhone models support eSIM, and that some Hong Kong and Macao models use two physical SIM cards (Set up eSIM on iPhone).
- Carrier lock: a phone locked to your home carrier won’t accept another operator’s eSIM. On iPhone, open Settings > General > About: “No SIM Restrictions” next to Carrier Lock means it’s unlocked (Apple).
- Which line uses data: after installing, set the Lao eSIM as your mobile-data line (on iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data). Apple’s guide Use eSIM while traveling internationally covers it.
- Roaming: switch on data roaming only if your eSIM provider says so.
What travellers ask us most
From the messages our support team receives, the recurring questions are: refunds and payment, phone numbers and calls (our eSIM is data-only), no data after landing (usually the mobile-data line or a setting), data running out, and which plan to choose. The checks above solve most “no data” cases before you fly.
Conclusion
Laos supports eSIM. To get a Lao number, visit a Unitel or Lao Telecom service centre in town with your passport. To be online as soon as you land without a shop visit, install an eSIM bought online before you travel, keeping in mind it’s data-only.
Frequently asked questions
Does Laos support eSIM? +
Yes. Lao Telecom states on its website that any of its numbers can be switched to eSIM or opened as a new eSIM number, and Unitel's identity-check system supports eSIM registration. Travel eSIMs sold online also work in Laos on the local networks.
Can I buy an eSIM at Wattay or Luang Prabang airport? +
No. The airport counters sell physical SIM cards. If you ask for an eSIM, you'll usually be sent to an operator service centre in town, where you register with your passport.
Does ETL offer eSIM? +
We have not found an official ETL eSIM offer for tourists on its website. Unitel and Lao Telecom are the operators to ask.
Will an eSIM bought online give me a Lao phone number? +
No. Lao regulation requires in-person ID registration for a line with a number, calls and SMS, so eSIMs sold online are data-only. Apps that need a Lao number by SMS, such as LCR (train tickets) or LOCA (ride-hailing), need a local SIM or operator eSIM registered in a shop.
Do I need to turn on data roaming? +
It depends on the eSIM. Travel eSIMs that roam onto a Lao network usually need data roaming switched on. A native Lao profile, such as our Unitel eSIM, activates automatically when your phone connects to Unitel, with nothing to dial. Follow your provider's own instructions.
