eSIM or SIM Card Not Working in Laos? Fixes by Symptom (2026)
Published

By Herbert Kanale, 15 years in Lao telecoms. Published 21 October 2026.
When a phone has no internet in Laos, the cause is almost always one of five things: the QR code can’t be scanned because it’s on the same phone, the phone is still using your home SIM for data, a local SIM isn’t registered, your home operator’s roaming isn’t working, or you’re in a place with no coverage. Find your symptom in the table, then go to that section.
Find your problem in 30 seconds
| What you see | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| I can’t install the eSIM: the QR code is on this phone | You can’t scan your own screen | Installing on the same phone |
| The eSIM is installed but there’s no internet | The phone still uses your home line for data | Switch your data line |
| ”Unable to add plan” or a similar error | No Wi-Fi during install, a typo, or a used code | Installation errors |
| A SIM bought in Laos has signal but no data | Registration not finished, or wrong APN | Local SIM cards |
| My home SIM doesn’t work in Laos | Roaming not enabled on your plan | Your home SIM |
| It worked in town, nothing now | You’re outside coverage | Remote areas |
Before anything else: don’t delete the eSIM. Our Unitel eSIM can’t be reinstalled once it’s removed. If something isn’t working, work through this page, then contact support with your order number.
Our Laos eSIM: what you don’t need to do
Our Laos eSIM runs on Unitel and activates automatically: data works the moment it connects to Unitel. There’s no code to dial and no data-roaming setting to switch on. The validity starts at that first connection, not when you buy or install the eSIM. Other travel eSIMs that roam onto a Lao network often do need data roaming switched on; check your seller’s instructions.
Installing on the same phone
This is the support request we see most, and it isn’t a fault: you ordered on your phone, the QR code arrived by email on that phone, and a phone can’t scan its own screen. Three ways round it:
- Use a second screen. Open the email on a laptop, a tablet or a friend’s phone, then scan the code from there with your phone (Settings › Mobile Service or Cellular › Add eSIM on iPhone; Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Add eSIM on most Android phones).
- Enter the details manually. Under the QR code, the email gives an SM-DP+ address and an activation code. In the same eSIM menu, choose Enter Details Manually (iPhone) or the option to enter the code manually (on Android its name varies by brand) and paste them. Watch for a stray space when you paste.
- Install before you fly, on Wi-Fi. Installing needs an internet connection. Do it at home or at the hotel the night before, not on arrival with no data.
Installed but no internet: switch your data line
The second most common case: the Laos eSIM is installed, but the phone is still trying to use your home SIM or a previous eSIM for mobile data. Dual-SIM phones don’t switch over by themselves.
- iPhone: Settings › Mobile Service (or Cellular) › Mobile Data › choose the Laos eSIM.
- Android: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Mobile data › choose the Laos eSIM.
Then turn airplane mode on for ten seconds and off again, so the phone searches for Unitel. If you keep your home SIM on for calls and messages, turn off data roaming on the home line to avoid charges from your home operator.
Still nothing after that? Restart the phone, and check that network selection is set to automatic. The APN is normally set by the eSIM itself; if a phone asks for one, it’s unitel3g.
Installation errors
- “Unable to add plan” / “Cannot complete request”: you need Wi-Fi during installation; check the activation code for typos or spaces.
- “This code is no longer valid”: the code has already been used, including a cancelled attempt. Contact support with your order number.
- No eSIM option in your settings: the phone may not support eSIM, or it’s locked to a carrier, which can hide the menu. Some iPhone models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao use two physical SIMs instead of eSIM. Our eSIM compatibility guide has the checks.
A SIM card bought in Laos
If you bought a physical SIM at the airport or in a shop:
- It must be registered with your passport. Lao regulation requires it; the shop does it when you buy. If the registration didn’t go through, the line may not work. Our passport and registration guide explains how it works for each operator, and how to activate a Unitel SIM covers the checks.
- Your phone must be unlocked. A phone locked to your home carrier rejects foreign SIM cards.
- Check the APN if there’s signal but no data: Unitel
unitel3g, Lao Telecomltcnet, ETLetlnet(our APN guides for Unitel, Lao Telecom and ETL have the full settings).
Your home SIM on roaming
If you’re trying to use your own operator’s roaming, the fix is with them, not in Laos. Check that international roaming is enabled on your plan, that your operator has a roaming partner in Laos, and what it costs per day. Travellers on forums regularly report home SIMs showing “no service” in Laos when roaming wasn’t activated before departure. A local SIM or eSIM avoids the question.
Remote areas: it’s the coverage, not the phone
Coverage is strong in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Pakse and along the main roads. It thins out or disappears in the mountains, on long river journeys, in caves and in remote villages, whatever your operator. If your phone worked in town and stops in the countryside, that’s coverage, not a fault.
Download offline maps and anything else you need before you leave a town. Our area guides say where to expect gaps: the slow boat, Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi, the Bolaven Plateau, rural Laos and the Laos-China railway.
Check your data, and when to contact us
To check how much data is left on our Laos eSIM, dial *122# from the eSIM line. Our plans are data only: once the allowance is used, data stops, and the eSIM has no phone number for calls or SMS.
If you’ve worked through this page and it still doesn’t work, contact support with your order number, phone model and the exact error message. That gets you a useful answer faster.
What we checked
- Activation, data check code and APN of our Laos eSIM: our product data (Unitel profile), 21 October 2026.
- Support cases: the three most common situations reported to our support (same-phone QR code, data line not switched, remote coverage), described in general terms, without customer data.
- Local SIM registration: Lao Telecom, Unitel and ETL websites, checked 19 October 2026 (see our passport guide).
- Home SIM roaming: traveller reports on operator community forums (EE community, Reddit), 2024–2025. User reports, not verified by us.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to dial a code or turn on data roaming for the Internet in Laos eSIM? +
No. Our Laos eSIM runs on Unitel and activates automatically: data works as soon as the eSIM connects to Unitel. There is nothing to dial and nothing to switch on. What you do need is to set the Laos eSIM as your mobile-data line.
I bought the eSIM on my phone. How do I scan a QR code that is on the same screen? +
You can't scan your own screen. Open the email on another device (a laptop, a tablet or a friend's phone) and scan it from there, or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email manually in your phone's eSIM settings.
The eSIM is installed but I have no internet in Laos. What should I check first? +
Check which line your phone uses for mobile data. If your home SIM or another eSIM is still selected, switch mobile data to the Laos eSIM, then toggle airplane mode.
Should I delete the eSIM and reinstall it if it doesn't work? +
No. Our Unitel eSIM can't be reinstalled once it is deleted. Contact support with your order number instead.
Why does my phone have no signal in parts of Laos? +
Coverage in Laos is strong in towns and along the main roads, but it drops in the mountains, on rivers, in caves and in remote villages. In those places no operator may have signal, so the phone and the SIM are not the problem.
My Lao SIM card from a shop has signal but no data. Why? +
A local SIM must be registered with your passport. If registration isn't complete, data can be blocked. Check with the operator's shop where you bought it.
How do I check how much data is left on my Laos eSIM? +
Dial *122# from the Laos eSIM line.
