4G in town

Wi-Fi at cafés and guesthouses

Most cafés, guesthouses and hotels offer free Wi-Fi. It’s generally fine for light browsing and messaging, but speeds vary and it can sag in the evening when everyone’s online. For anything time-sensitive — a video call, uploading a big gallery — your own mobile data is usually faster and more reliable than café Wi-Fi.

Where signal drops

• Kuang Si Falls (about 30 km out) — patchy. Download maps before you go.
• Mount Phousi at busy sunset times — usable but congested.
• Boat trips on the Mekong (e.g. to the Pak Ou caves) — expect gaps.

The pattern is the standard one for Laos: solid in town, thinner the further out you go.
