Vientiane to Luang Prabang is the most common domestic trip in Laos, and since the Laos-China Railway opened it has stopped being an all-day bus ride. This guide compares the three options with dated sources and says plainly where we couldn’t confirm a number.

Short answer: the train is the best balance for most travellers on published information: about two hours and 330,000 to 975,000 kip depending on class, but stations are 12 to 14 km from each city centre. We did not verify current flight or bus fares for this page. Fares and times below were checked on 2026-10-26.

We have not verified current flight or bus fares and durations, so they are left out of the table rather than guessed.

By train

Seat61 (updated 2026-06-06) lists 2nd class at 330,000 kip, 1st class at 522,000 kip and business at 975,000 kip, with the fast train covering 239 km in roughly two hours.

The catch is the stations. Vientiane station is about 14 km from the centre (around 30 minutes by taxi) and Luang Prabang station about 12 km from the centre (around 25 minutes by taxi), per Seat61. Door to door, allow time at both ends.

Booking: Seat61 recommends 12go.asia or Bookaway.com as the easiest options, or buying at the station up to seven days ahead.

New: Boten to Vientiane intercity trains

A Boten to Vientiane intercity service launched on Monday 28 September 2026, Global Times reports. C95 leaves Boten at 08:00 and reaches Vientiane at 11:47; C96 leaves Vientiane at 14:05 and reaches Boten at 18:32. Both call at Boten, Nateuy, Muang Xay, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane.

By air or bus

Flights and buses also run this route. We haven’t verified current fares or durations for either, so check an airline or booking site, and add airport time and transfers when comparing with the train’s door-to-door time.

Staying connected on the way

Keep your Laos eSIM active on Unitel; data works in both cities. Lao Telecom signed an agreement in June 2026 to build and operate a 4G network along the Lao-China Railway (Developing Telecoms), but we haven’t tested signal on board, so download your ticket and offline maps first. Plans and prices are on the Laos eSIM page, and our eSIM activation guide covers setup. Coming from Thailand? See Thailand to Vientiane, and for the river route to Luang Prabang see our slow boat internet guide.
