Hanoi to Vientiane: Getting from Vietnam to Laos (and Staying Online)

Bus winding through mountains between Vietnam and Laos

Vietnam and Laos share a long mountainous border, and Hanoi is the most common springboard for travellers heading into Laos. Here’s how to make the Hanoi → Vientiane trip — and how to stay connected the whole way.

Your options, fastest to slowest

  • Fly — the easy option. Direct Hanoi–Vientiane flights take about an hour. Best if you’re short on time.
  • Sleeper bus — the classic backpacker route. Long (20+ hours) and winding through the mountains, crossing at a land border such as Nam Phao / Cau Treo. Cheap and memorable, if not comfortable.
  • Overland via stops — some travellers break the journey (e.g. via Vinh or the central crossings), mixing bus and local transport.

Whichever you choose, the border is where connectivity matters most: it’s exactly where you need maps, your booking, and a working messaging app — and exactly where a Vietnam-only SIM stops being useful.

One eSIM for both sides of the border

Rather than burning through a Vietnamese SIM and then hunting for a Laos SIM at the crossing, a single regional eSIM covers both Vietnam and Laos on one plan. Your phone connects to a local partner network on each side, so you cross already online.

We built a page around exactly this corridor — see the Vietnam + Laos eSIM for coverage and plans. Install it before you leave Hanoi and you’ll have data from the Old Quarter to the banks of the Mekong in Vientiane.

Tips for the crossing

  • Download offline maps of your route and Vientiane before you go.
  • Have your visa/entry details and onward booking saved offline — border Wi-Fi is non-existent.
  • On a sleeper bus, keep a power bank handy — it’s a long ride with no charging.
  • Expect patchy signal in the mountains between towns; it’s normal.

Arriving in Vientiane

Vientiane is relaxed and well covered for mobile data — easy to find your guesthouse, book a Loca ride, or plan the next leg to Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang. The same eSIM carries you through the rest of Laos without another purchase.

Sort your connectivity once on the Vietnam + Laos eSIM page and the only thing left to plan is the journey itself.
