Thailand SIM Card & eSIM Guide 2026: TrueMove H, AIS & DTAC Compared

Thailand has three real mobile networks — TrueMove H, AIS and DTAC — and all three cover Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and the main islands well. The real questions for a traveler are simpler: what does it cost, and can you skip the airport SIM counter? Here’s the 2026 breakdown.
Thailand eSIM prices at a glance (2026)
| Plan | Data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| TrueMove H eSIM | 15GB | 7 days | $8.90 |
| TrueMove H eSIM | 50GB | 10 days | $11.90 |
| TrueMove H eSIM | Unlimited | 8 days | $18.90 |
| TrueMove H eSIM | Unlimited | 15 days | $37.90 |
| TrueMove H eSIM | Unlimited | 30 days | $47.90 |
These are our Thailand eSIM plans, pre-activated and delivered by email before you fly — install it on the plane, land, and you’re online. Physical prepaid SIMs from TrueMove, AIS and DTAC are sold at the airport and at 7-Eleven stores across the country for a broadly similar price range, but require showing your passport at the counter and manual activation.
For scale against the global resellers: Airalo and Holafly’s Thailand eSIMs run $21.50 and $27.50 for 7 days — both unlimited-labeled with an undisclosed fair-use cap, versus our transparent 15GB for $8.90 over the same week. Holafly’s Thailand eSIM runs on the True/DTAC network; Airalo doesn’t disclose which. Checked at each provider’s own site, September 2026.
TrueMove H vs AIS vs DTAC
| Carrier | City coverage | Islands & rural areas | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TrueMove H | Excellent (4G/5G) | Strong on Phuket, Koh Samui and most tourist islands | Our eSIM runs on this network |
| AIS | Excellent (4G/5G) | Widely considered the strongest rural/mountain coverage | Often the pricier local SIM at the counter |
| DTAC (merged into True) | Very good (4G/5G) | Solid in cities, more variable outside them | Now operates jointly with TrueMove under the True group |
For a short trip covering Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the main islands, all three perform similarly — you won’t notice a difference. If your route heads deep into the northern hills or remote national parks, AIS has the best reputation for rural reach, but TrueMove H (our network) is a safe, well-covered choice for the vast majority of tourist itineraries, including Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui.
Why buy an eSIM instead of a local SIM
- Skip the counter. No passport registration queue at the airport or a 7-Eleven — the eSIM is pre-activated and tied to your order, not a physical card.
- Online before you fly. Install the QR code from your hotel room days before departure; data turns on automatically the moment you land in Thailand.
- No SIM swap. Keep your home SIM in the phone for your existing number and calls; the eSIM handles data on a second line.
What the counter actually looks like. The same scene plays out at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Chiang Mai every day: a queue of tired arrivals paying roughly 299–699 THB ($9–22) for the common 8–15 day tourist package — usually unlimited or high-speed data that throttles after a fair-use quota — or 899–1,199 THB for a 30-day option, from AIS, TrueMove H or DTAC. The same short-term data from a city store, a 7-Eleven, or an operator’s own app frequently costs less, sometimes 199–399 THB for comparable or better allowances — so there’s a real airport premium, though it tends to run milder here than in some neighboring countries. It’s not really a scam — the counter is just selling convenience, and staff genuinely handle activation fast, usually 10–20 minutes even when the queue is long. What it does mean: passport plus a live photo for KYC, in person, right after you land, and tourist SIMs are typically capped at a couple of months’ validity. Our Thailand eSIM runs on TrueMove H and skips that counter entirely — it installs before you fly and activates automatically the moment your phone connects on arrival, no dialing codes, in-store registration or KYC step needed. Validity only starts on first connection, so there’s no cost to installing it early. Two minutes scanning a QR code from home gets maps, Grab and messaging ready before you’ve even reached baggage claim.
Combining Thailand with Laos, Vietnam or Cambodia
Doing a longer Southeast Asia loop? If your route covers Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, one regional eSIM can cover all three on a single data balance — see our Thailand, Vietnam & Cambodia loop guide. Adding Laos to the mix needs a separate Laos-capable plan, since Thailand and Laos aren’t on the same regional bundle — see our guide to eSIMs for Laos and Thailand for how to handle both without overpaying. If Vietnam alone is next on the route rather than the full loop, Viettel’s local network runs the same way TrueMove H does here — see Vietnam eSIM plans before you cross the border.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best SIM card for tourists in Thailand? +
TrueMove H, AIS and DTAC all offer strong 4G/5G coverage in the cities and main tourist areas. TrueMove H is the network behind our Thailand eSIM — pre-activated, delivered by email, no counter registration.
How much does a Thailand SIM card or eSIM cost in 2026? +
Our TrueMove H eSIM plans start at $8.90 for 15GB over 7 days, up to $47.90 for unlimited data over 30 days. Physical prepaid SIMs from AIS, DTAC and TrueMove cost a broadly similar range at 7-Eleven or the airport, plus passport registration at the counter. Global resellers cost more: Airalo's Thailand eSIM is $21.50 and Holafly's is $27.50 for a comparable 7 days, both unlimited with an undisclosed fair-use cap.
Do I need to register my passport for a Thailand SIM card? +
Physical prepaid SIMs bought locally require passport registration at the point of sale. An eSIM bought online and installed before you fly skips that step — it's pre-registered and activates automatically when you land.
