Vietnam Network Coverage: Viettel vs Vinaphone vs Mobifone

This is the question that really matters before buying a SIM card or eSIM for Vietnam: which network will actually work where you’re going? A cheap plan is worthless if you lose signal the moment you leave the city centre. Here’s a clear comparison of the three national carriers.
The short answer
For a traveler, Viettel is the best choice in Vietnam. It’s the country’s largest operator, with roughly 54% market share, and it’s universally recognized for the widest coverage in rural and remote areas. Vinaphone and Mobifone remain good options in cities, but weaken noticeably in mountains, valleys and some islands.
The three carriers compared
| Carrier | City coverage | Rural / mountain coverage | Reputation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viettel | Excellent (4G/5G) | The best — northern mountains, Mekong, coasts | #1 in the country, ~54% of the market |
| Vinaphone | Very good (4G/5G) | Decent, but drops in valleys | Strong in urban areas |
| Mobifone | Very good (4G/5G) | Variable, sometimes good local value | Good on Phu Quoc and in some cities |
In cities: all three do the job
In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hue or Hoi An, all three carriers offer fast 4G and increasingly widespread 5G. For a city-only trip, any of them will do. Da Nang, a favourite with remote workers, enjoys excellent mobile connectivity on top of fast café wifi.
If your trip is limited to the big cities, the choice of network is secondary — focus instead on data volume and price.
Outside the cities: Viettel takes the lead
This is where it all plays out. As soon as you leave urban centres — terraced rice fields in the North, mountain passes, remote villages, long roads — the difference becomes obvious.
Viettel runs the densest network in the country and keeps a reliable signal where the others drop: the highlands around Sapa and Ha Giang, the Mekong Delta, coastal areas. Vinaphone and Mobifone can have limited or unstable coverage in deep valleys.
If your itinerary includes the Ha Giang loop by motorbike or Sapa, Viettel isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.
The case of islands and Ha Long Bay
On Phu Quoc, Mobifone often gives good coverage of the tourist spots (Long Beach, Duong Dong, Sao Beach) at a sometimes better rate — but Viettel remains the more versatile choice if you’re combining the island with other regions.
In Ha Long Bay, no network is perfect: the thousands of karst towers block the signal once you’re out on the water. We cover realistic expectations in our guide wifi and connectivity in Ha Long Bay and Phu Quoc.
Our recommendation
Unless you have a very specific need, choose Viettel. It’s the only network that follows you everywhere, from the city to the most remote valleys. That’s exactly why SogdiaRoam’s Vietnam eSIMs run on a genuine local Viettel profile: you attach directly to the country’s largest network the moment you land.
