Wifi and Connectivity in Ha Long Bay and Phu Quoc

Mobile connectivity and wifi in Ha Long Bay and Phu Quoc

Ha Long Bay and Phu Quoc island top most Vietnam travel lists — and raise the same worry: will I have signal? Between cruises among the karst towers and the beaches of an island far from the mainland, connectivity deserves some clarity.

The quick answer

In Ha Long Bay, expect an irregular connection: cruise wifi is often limited to the restaurant, and mobile signal weakens once you’re out on the water. On Phu Quoc, coverage is good in the tourist areas — Mobifone is strong there, but Viettel remains the most versatile choice for a multi-region itinerary.

Ha Long Bay: managing expectations

Ha Long Bay is thousands of limestone towers rising out of the water — stunning, but a nightmare for radio waves. In practice:

  • Onboard wifi: most cruises include free wifi, but the signal is usually available in the restaurant area only, and stays weak.
  • Mobile signal: decent near the departure port (Ha Long, Hai Phong), it fluctuates then cuts out as the boat pushes deeper between the islands.
  • On land: hotels in the region, from guesthouses to 5-star, offer wifi; the higher-end the property, the better the connection.

The right mindset: enjoy the disconnection out in the bay, and plan to send your important messages before boarding or back at the dock. If your cruise passes through neighbouring, quieter Lan Ha Bay, conditions are similar.

Phu Quoc: a well-covered island

Good news: Phu Quoc is far better served than Ha Long Bay. Mobifone covers most tourist spots — Long Beach, Duong Dong, the Hon Thom cable car, Sao Beach — often with excellent 5G and at an attractive rate. Viettel also covers the island very well and remains preferable if Phu Quoc is just one stop on a larger trip.

As everywhere in Vietnam, buying a physical SIM on the island requires your passport for registration — and beware the “ghost” cards sold without it, as we explain in our guide on airport SIM cards: prices and scams. An eSIM installed before departure saves you that step and connects you the moment you land at Phu Quoc airport.

Which carrier to choose for both?

If your trip combines Ha Long Bay, Phu Quoc and other regions, Viettel is the safest choice: it covers both areas well while remaining the best network in the mountains and rural areas. Our coverage comparison details each carrier’s strengths. If your route also climbs into the North, see internet on the Ha Giang loop and in Sapa.

To size your plan, see how much data to plan — on an island or a cruise, your usage usually stays moderate.

Set off connected

Whether you’re dreaming of Ha Long’s emerald waters or Phu Quoc’s beaches, a local Viettel eSIM gives you the best possible coverage the moment you land, with no counter and no card to swap.
