When preparing a trip to Vietnam, a reliable mobile connection is high on most travellers’ lists. Many default to the biggest global eSIM brands and assume a higher price guarantees a better service. It’s worth checking what you actually get for the money — and, increasingly, what the network behind the plan is doing on the ground.

Global brands that advertise “unlimited” very often sell international roaming: your phone connects as a foreign visitor, sometimes routed through an operator outside Vietnam, while the headline “unlimited” hides a daily fair-use limit. Two things worth flagging in that table, because they are commonly mis-stated elsewhere:

• Airalo’s Vietnam host network is published as VinaPhone, not Viettel — its own product page shows VinaPhone as the primary network. Some comparison sites still say “Viettel or VinaPhone”; we only repeat what the operator states.
• Airalo’s standard packages are fixed-data (they stop when the data runs out and can be topped up). The “3GB/day then throttled” behaviour applies to its unlimited product specifically, not to every Airalo Vietnam plan.

What “unlimited” really means on a travel eSIM

Treat “unlimited” as a product label, not a promise of unlimited high-speed data. The two best-known brands illustrate why:

• Holafly advertises unlimited data on Vietnam, but its own page limits hotspot sharing to 1GB per day, and its fair-use policy lets the network temporarily reduce speed. So “unlimited” there means unlimited device data with a small, clearly-stated tethering cap — not unlimited everything.
• Saily states its unlimited Vietnam plan includes up to 5GB per day of high-speed data, after which service continues at reduced speed.

We take the more transparent route: a flat 5GB of high-speed data every day, resetting at 23:59 local time (GMT+7). Over a 30-day plan that’s up to 150GB, and you always know exactly where you stand. There is no roaming agreement in the middle, so your traffic isn’t routed through a foreign operator.

Once a day’s 5GB high-speed allowance is used, data simply stops until the next daily reset at 23:59 local time (GMT+7) — there is no low-speed fallback. This applies across our Vietnam, Laos and Indochina plans: you always travel at full speed for your allowance, and when it’s gone the connection pauses rather than dropping to a slow tier. Which network: Viettel, VinaPhone or MobiFone?

Viettel is Vietnam’s largest mobile operator, and it is the network our Vietnam eSIM uses. That matters most outside the big cities — the northern highlands around Sapa and the Ha Giang loop, the Mekong Delta, and long overland routes.

The headline numbers, with their dates attached:

• Market share: the OECD put Viettel at 54.2% of Vietnam’s mobile broadband subscriptions in Q4 2021 — the country’s leader by a wide margin. Viettel’s own corporate reporting has since quoted a ~54% share of mobile subscribers; the two figures differ by date and methodology, so we date them rather than present a single number as current.
• Overall network speed: in Ookla’s Speedtest report for Vietnam H1 2025, across all mobile technologies, Viettel had the highest median download speed at 165.03 Mbps, ahead of VinaPhone (78.69 Mbps) and MobiFone (68.45 Mbps).
• 5G specifically: Ookla’s H1 2025 5G-only measurements put VinaPhone first (594.16 Mbps median 5G download), ahead of Viettel (421.61 Mbps). So “largest network” and “fastest 5G” are not the same claim — and we don’t blur them.
• 5G rollout: Viettel launched Vietnam’s first commercial 5G network on 15 October 2024, reported by Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications.

Do you need a passport or eKYC? How Vietnam registration works

Vietnam tightly regulates mobile subscribers. Under Decree 163/2024/NĐ-CP (the current rules, effective 24 December 2024, replacing the older Decree 49/2017), a foreign national registering a mobile subscriber must provide a valid passport or qualifying electronic identity. Operators have enforced this aggressively: Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications ran a national clean-up that checked roughly 125 million subscribers against the national population database, and in 2023 the three big carriers stopped activating new subscriptions through ordinary agents.

The practical consequence: buying directly from an operator’s own tourist channel requires identity verification. Viettel’s official tourist portal asks for a passport-front image and a portrait photo and describes a five-step eKYC; MobiFone’s visitor eSIM flow likewise asks for passport details and online verification. That’s the honest picture for the official operator path.

Buying at the airport vs before you fly

Arriving with data already working is simpler, cheaper and less risky than buying a physical SIM card after baggage claim. Here’s the honest version of what the alternatives look like.

Vietnam’s big airports (Noi Bai/Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat/Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang) all have SIM sellers, but the traveller reports are consistent about the friction:

• Prices vary widely by seller. A traveller writing on Tripadvisor in May 2026 reported paying 400,000₫ at an airport booth for what they understood to be a 30-day Viettel package, versus 180,000₫ at an actual Viettel store for a comparable 5GB/day-plus-calls plan.
• Package descriptions can be unclear, and one traveller found the airport SIM showed far fewer days of validity than expected when checked.
• Similar reports from Da Nang put airport SIMs around 350,000–400,000₫, and several posters describe sellers whose status (official carrier counter vs authorised dealer vs reseller) isn’t obvious.

None of this means every airport counter is a scam — it means buying blind, jet-lagged, with cash, is a poor way to judge a mobile package. Do you need a Vietnamese phone number?

Only if you specifically need to receive calls or SMS — and if so, Viettel is the wrong plan, because it’s data-only. A data-only eSIM cannot receive ordinary SMS, including many verification codes.

If a local number matters to you (a hotel calling back, a ride-hailing or delivery app, receiving a one-time code), choose a MobiFone plan instead: those are provisioned with a real Vietnamese +84 number that can receive calls and SMS, and the 11-day option bundles 40 minutes of outbound local calls. As with any local number, a few banks and services still apply their own country or anti-fraud rules, so test the specific service you depend on.

Confusingly, some pages online imply an eSIM is “data-only” full stop. That’s true of Viettel and of most global travel eSIMs — but it is not true of every plan we sell, and it’s exactly the kind of detail worth checking before you buy. What travellers report (troubleshooting)

The following are user reports, not measured facts or carrier policy — useful for diagnosis, but individual experiences vary, and both success and failure stories exist for every brand.

• “It won’t connect after landing.” The most common fixes travellers report: enable data roaming for the travel eSIM, make sure it’s selected as your data line, confirm the APN, and try manually selecting a network. Some also found they needed Wi-Fi if the profile hadn’t finished installing.
• “It works on 4G/LTE but not 5G.” Some users report forcing LTE as a temporary test fixes a flaky first connection. Treat this as a troubleshooting step, not a rule.
• “A local profile felt faster than a roaming eSIM.” Several travellers note their roaming eSIM felt sluggish next to a local one; we wouldn’t treat a handful of posts as a network benchmark, but it matches the technical logic (a local profile attaches directly rather than as a guest).
• Not every roaming eSIM fails. There are plenty of reports of global eSIMs working perfectly in Vietnam, including in Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang. Don’t read the above as “brand X doesn’t work.”
