Best SIM Card in Laos (2026): Unitel, LTC or ETL?
Published Updated

By Herbert Kanale, 15 years in Lao telecoms. Updated 19 October 2026.
Short answer: for most travellers, the best SIM card in Laos is Unitel’s, for its coverage and cheap data packages. Lao Telecom (LTC) and ETL are good alternatives. You can buy one at the airport or at an official shop, with your passport. If you’d rather skip the shop, a Unitel eSIM installed before you leave works as soon as you land.
The three operators
Laos has three main mobile operators. Their prepaid packages are similar; what differs is mostly coverage outside the cities and the price per gigabyte.
| Operator | Best for | Example data package | Full prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unitel | Most travellers, including outside the main cities | 5GB for 7 days: 15,000 kip (≈ $0.67) | Unitel package prices |
| Lao Telecom (LTC) | Good value, unlimited social media on some packages | 10GB for 10 days: 35,000 kip (≈ $1.56) | Lao Telecom package prices |
| ETL | Large amounts of data for little money | 20GB (Enjoy play_55): 55,000 kip (≈ $2.44) | ETL package prices |
Examples from our price records of August and September 2026. Operators change their offers often: check the matching price page before you buy.
Unitel
Unitel is the operator we recommend to most travellers, and the network our eSIMs run on. Its data packages are activated with a USSD code or in its app. Codes and prices are on our Unitel data package prices page.
Lao Telecom (LTC)
The historic operator. Some of its packages include unlimited social media (Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, WeChat), handy if you use them a lot. See the Lao Telecom package prices.
ETL
ETL offers large data allowances at low prices, for example 42GB for 90,000 kip. See the ETL package prices.
Where to buy a SIM card in Laos
You have two safe options:
- At the airport, on arrival. The operators have counters at Vientiane (Wattay) and Luang Prabang airports, both still operating.
- At the operator’s official shop in town (like the Unitel centre in the photo above).
Avoid informal resellers, especially around Luang Prabang airport: travellers report inflated prices and packages that don’t contain all the advertised data. More in our guide to where to buy a SIM card in Luang Prabang.
You need your passport
At the airport and in shops, you will be asked for your passport: Lao law requires every line to be registered to its user. Allow a few minutes for registration. Full details in do you need a passport to buy a SIM card in Laos?
SIM card or eSIM?
| Local SIM card | Unitel eSIM bought online | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Cheapest | A few dollars more |
| Where to get it | Airport or shop, in Laos | Online, before you leave |
| Passport | Asked at the counter | Nothing to do: the line is already registered |
| Phone number | Yes | No: data only, no calls or SMS |
| When it works | After purchase and registration | As soon as you land |
Our Laos eSIMs run on the Unitel network: 10GB for 10 days at $6.90, 15GB for 15 days at $7.90, 20GB for 30 days at $8.90 and 30GB for 30 days at $9.90. Data stops once the allowance is used, with no slow-speed fallback, so pick a package that fits your trip.
Our advice
- Short trip, you want to be online on arrival: a Unitel eSIM installed before you leave.
- Long stay, tight budget, you need a Lao number: a local Unitel SIM card, bought at the airport or a shop with your passport.
- Lots of video or social media: compare the Lao Telecom and ETL packages.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best SIM card in Laos for tourists? +
For most travellers, Unitel: it's the operator we recommend for coverage outside the main cities, and its data packages are among the cheapest. Lao Telecom (LTC) and ETL are good alternatives, especially for large amounts of data at a low price.
Do you need a passport to buy a SIM card in Laos? +
Yes. At the airport and at the operators' official shops, you'll be asked for your passport so the line can be registered in your name. A pre-registered eSIM bought online saves you that step.
Where can I buy a SIM card in Laos? +
At the operators' airport counters (Vientiane, Luang Prabang) and at their official shops in town. Avoid informal resellers: you risk paying more for a package with less data than advertised.
How much does a data package cost in Laos? +
Local packages are very cheap: for example 5GB for 7 days at 15,000 kip with Unitel, or 10GB for 10 days at 35,000 kip with Lao Telecom (prices recorded in August and September 2026). Prices change often: see our Unitel, Lao Telecom and ETL price pages.
SIM card or eSIM in Laos? +
A local SIM card is the cheapest, but you have to find one, show your passport and queue. A Unitel eSIM installed before you leave works as soon as you land, with no shop and no passport; it is data-only, with no phone number and no calls.
