Short answer: in Luang Prabang you can buy a SIM card at the airport, from vendors near the boat pier if you arrive by river, or from shops along Sisavangvong Road in the centre. Lao Telecom also has official customer service centres in town. Bring your original passport. Coming by slow boat? Buy in Huay Xai before you board. Or install a Unitel eSIM before you travel and skip the shops.

Where to buy a local SIM card in Luang Prabang

Where you buy depends on how you arrive:

  • At the airport: Luang Prabang International Airport has kiosks for Unitel, Lao Telecom, ETL and TPlus. Staff will help activate the SIM and set it up in your phone — the most convenient option if you want data as soon as you land. The counters follow the flight schedule and close earlier than in Vientiane, around 8:00 PM (observed August 2026).
  • At the boat pier: If you’re arriving by river from Thailand or elsewhere in Laos, vendors near the pier sell SIM cards, though selection is limited and you may need to handle registration yourself.
  • On the main road: Sisavangvong Road, the city’s main street past the Royal Palace Museum, the Night Market and Wat Phon, has many shops selling SIM cards. Compare prices — some sellers overcharge or sell expired cards, so buy from a recognizable storefront if you can.
  • At an official shop: Lao Telecom lists two customer service centres in town (below). We’ll add Unitel’s and ETL’s Luang Prabang addresses once our field study has verified them.

Registration requires your passport regardless of where you buy.

Arriving by slow boat

The two-day slow boat from Huay Xai stops overnight in Pakbeng before reaching Luang Prabang. Our advice: sort out your SIM in Huay Xai, before you board.

  • In Huay Xai, Lao Telecom lists an official customer service centre (Houayxaytai village, tel. 084-211006) and ETL a Bokeo branch (Houysaiynuea village). Travellers on r/laos also report buying their SIM there before the trip.
  • On the river, signal comes and goes: usable near villages, then long stretches without data. Download your maps and anything you need before leaving.
  • At the Luang Prabang pier, vendors sell SIMs, but the choice is limited (see above). If you can wait, buy in town.

The alternative: install a Unitel eSIM before you fly

If you’d rather not hunt for a SIM seller after a long journey, a Laos eSIM on Unitel activates automatically the moment your phone connects to Unitel in Laos — no airport kiosk, no boat-pier vendor, no language barrier. Install it any time before you travel; there’s no in-store registration for the eSIM itself.

  • Cost: plans start at $6.90 for 10GB over 10 days on Unitel’s local network.
  • Data-only: Lao regulation requires in-person ID registration at a customer service centre for a line with a number, calls and SMS, so no eSIM sold online includes them. A voice-capable line is obtainable in-country at a customer service centre with your passport.
  • Data stops at the cap: once your allowance is used, data stops (no slow-speed fallback), so choose a plan that fits your trip. You can top up and check your balance.

Which should you choose?

  • Arriving by air, you don’t mind a short stop: a physical SIM at the airport, before the counters close.
  • Arriving by slow boat: buy in Huay Xai, or install an eSIM before the trip.
  • You want to be online the moment you land, however you arrive: the eSIM.
